The History Of The Ford Power Stroke Diesel 1982
It all started in 1982, when we first got our hands on this 6.9L V-8. It was available in 31/44- and 1-ton E- and F-series trucks and produced 175 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque. Despite its simple indirect mechanical injection, these were typically good for 250,000 miles between overhauls. Dual batteries and an incredibly stout starter were mandatory to overcome the 20.7:1 compression ratio and later, 21.5:1 (resulting in 20 more lb-ft of torque). Minted by the tens of thousands until the '87 model year, these powered countless Ford products.

The History Of The Ford Power Stroke Diesel 1988
Now that everyone had a taste of the 6.9L's uncanny ability to lug around anything we dared to drag behind it, consumers wanted more power. Ford and International responded with the 7.3L V-8 in 1988. The bore increase resulted in 185 hp at 3,300 rpm and 338 lb-ft of torque at just 1,600 rpm. Produced until 1992, this engine put Ford on the map as a serious player in the light-duty diesel truck wars.

The E- and F-series trucks were heavily facelifted in 1992. Aside from being screwed together a bit tighter than before and being loads more comfortable, the big news was the availability of a dealer-installed turbo system. Power numbers were never official, since it wasn't a factory part, but it gave power-hungry enthusiasts something to chew on. Meanwhile, the Dodge and Chevy camps were celebrating with factory turbocharged engines for years.

The History Of The Ford Power Stroke Diesel 1993
By 1993, Ford decided it was time to start adding some boost to its diesels. By adding a turbocharger to the 7.3, power went up to 190 hp and 388 lb-ft of twist. Truth be told, it wasn't exactly what Ford and International had envisioned, as power output and fuel economy was a bit off target. But it was an incredibly good start and a sign of great things to come.

The History Of The Ford Power Stroke Diesel First Power Stroke 1994
The Power Stroke engine first made its debut in model year '94. The heavily-revised 7.3L short block was now capped off with more efficient two-valve cylinder heads and direct electro-hydraulic injection. Dropping the compression to 17.5:1 and adding computer-controlled engine management was a major step forward in diesel engine technology. Power was now up to 215 hp and a staggering 425 lb-ft of torque. This was also the first time that many aftermarket companies embraced the Ford diesel and within a year, we saw tuners coaxing over 300 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. This was the engine that put Ford on the performance diesel map.
