SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women Part 1: High Heels Kicking It In High Gear

Maybe you've heard the joke that a woman's feet are small so she can stand closer to the stove to cook her man's supper. Well, get ready boys, because the joke is on you! With this incredible project completely created and executed by women, one could now say a woman's hands are small to easily fit into the tight spaces of a Mustang engine bay. These ladies are trading in their stiletto heels for wrenches and go-fast parts to complete the only all-female Mustang build project currently in existence. And this whip is going to be one awesome boosted Pony when they are finished!

Source Interlink Media (our parent company) readers were given the opportunity to vote on their favorite of three '13 Mustang design renderings over the course of a few weeks. The votes were tallied and the fans chose a clean, yet aggressive Steed as their favorite, boasting a black satin exterior with lots of luxurious rose-gold bling on the outside--all designed by Jennifer Seely of Ford Motor Company, and a very opulent interior.

JoAnn Bortles, of Crazy Horse Custom Paint and SEMA Business Women's Select Committee Member, thought it would be cool for an all-women team to build a Mustang with two main goals in mind: to raise awareness of women in the aftermarket automotive industry, as well as make a contribution to the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund. The program is dedicated to fostering the next generation of gearheads that will lead our performance industry, and that's quite a worthy cause if you ask us!

Our Blue Oval friends saw immense value in this build, and donated a '13 Mustang GT/CS equipped with a 5.0L Coyote engine, six-speed transmission, SYNC, navigation, and the glassroof option -- another shining example of how Ford supports the growth of our industry. The build itself is taking place at our SIM office in El Segundo, California, and has been broken up into stages, with each portion of the project having it's own team leaders. There are over 30 crew members participating, but only a few special women have come from near and far to actually be hands-on and oversee the construction of this totally custom Mustang.

Rose Kawasaki of Exports International heads the all-star team as project manager, with Susan Carpenter of JR Products taking product procurement lead, Camee Edelbrock of Schiefer Media as head of PR and communications, the aforementioned JoAnn Bortles as powertrain team lead, and Mollie Lewis of All In the Wrist Diesel Repair will serve as team leader for the undercarriage. In addition, there is Kristin Cline of Cie Studios as suspension team lead; head of the stereo and interior segment Theresa Contreras of L&G Enterprises with the big task of exterior lead; and finally the crew chief overseeing each unique detail, S. Kellie Colf of Colf Creative Resources. These women are as hardcore as they come, all with solid backgrounds in the performance industry.

Now that we've given you the insider details on a few of the girls behind the build, it's time for some juicy info on the game plan for this fresh Coyote concept. They aren't wasting any time jumping into the fun stuff -- Powertrain Build Week, which just so happens to be our favorite part of any Mustang overhaul.

With 420 hp, this '13 Mustang creates the perfect powerplant for forced induction. The folks at Edelbrock have provided a twin-screw E-Force supercharger to bolt on to this bad Pony, which should help easily produce roughly 500 rwhp with minimal boost.Other goodies for the powertrain have not yet been divulged, but we trust the girls are going to make a killer combination. Is there anything better than a boosted Mustang?

We're crossing our fingers and hoping for some dyno data after the Edelbrock supercharger and other go-fast parts are added. We love seeing big power numbers, but this project is so much more than that for these hardcore ladies and their sponsors. The completed vehicle will be auctioned on eBay Motors with proceeds going to the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund, which means you have a chance at owning a real piece of Mustang history.

Once Powertrain Week is completed, this expert all-female task force will conquer undercarriage and suspension, followed by the exterior paint and body. The completed she-Stallion will be unveiled at the SEMA show in true Las Vegas fashion on Tuesday, October 30, 2012. The eBay Motors auction will begin during SEMA and run until November 9, 2012.
