For the first test, the GT1000 5.4L was equipped with a stock GT500 supercharger. Obviously the motor was never going to produce 1,000 hp with the stock Roots blower, but it did allow us to run our header test at a more realistic power level.

Since Ford blessed the GT500 with drive-by-wire throttle activation, we had to make our own mechanical version. Apparently the boys at Westech didn't take to my vice grips on the throttle shaft, so they machined this aluminum throttle lever. Not only did it look much better, it also didn't damage the throttle shaft.

Run on the engine dyno, the stock supercharger (with stock pulleys) offered a peak boost pressure of 10 psi and peak power of 630 hp and 547 lb-ft of torque.

Next we installed 1-inch long-tube headers from American Racing. Equipped with the headers, the 5.4L produced 663 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Interestingly enough, the peak boost pressure dropped down to 7.2 psi. (Editor's note--Don't even think about asking to increase the boost pressure to match the 10 psi on the stock exhaust manifolds. That the boost dropped is a sure sign that a restriction was removed, and in proper testing, only one change is made per test.)

All of the headers were run with appropriate collector extensions, 3.0-inch on the 1 headers and 3.5-inch on the larger headers.
