Recession Special Short Block Tooling
Guadagno told us that before this tooling came out, cutting grooves in the heads was a grueling 10-hour process. The tooling is quite expensive, but it cuts labor down to about five minutes per cylinder head.

Recession Special Short Block Drill
When we first assembled our Recession Special engine, we got a little hasty when installing the oil pan and snapped an oil pan bolt off in the block. After breaking off the Easy Out in the hole, we went ahead and assembled the block, using some gasket sealer in that area for extra leak protection and it worked fine for the couple of hours that the car was running. In having the block torn down again, we took the opportunity to remove the bolt. Drilling and even welding a bolt to the old bolt did nothing to get it or the Easy Out out of the hole. We called upon the talents of Mopar Muscle's tech editor Dave Young, who tediously drilled and hammered until the Easy Out and the bolt were removed. Dave then preceeded to break off the tap in the hole, which is made from the same hard metal that the Easy Out is. More drilling ensued and we ended up installing a Helicoil in the hole. The moral of the story is that haste does in fact make waste. And, don't forget to install the oil pan rail support before you zip the bolts in with the air ratchet, otherwise you may snap off a bolt in the block.

Recession Special Short Block Ignition Coil
To solve a misfire issue that we experienced on the dyno, we called Summit Racing and ordered one of its new drop-in 5.0 distributors, along with a TFI ignition coil. We also needed to vent the crankcase, and ordered this Summit Racing breather. Summit's Street & Strip Ready to Run billet distributor (PN SUM-850411) retails for just $189.95, and is a direct fit for '86-'93 5.0L Mustangs. Summit's High Output Ignition Coil (PN SUM-853011) retails for $34.95 and is designed for TFI ignition systems.

Recession Special Short Block Gaskets
We called up Fel Pro for the needed 1006 head gaskets. Your author hasn't had much luck with rear main seals lately, and the fresh one in the Recession Special leaked a palm-sized spot of oil every time you shut the car off. After chatting with our man at Fel Pro, he suggested we use Fel Pro's Teflon coated rear main seal (PN 2941). So far, we've had no leaks, and we may be ordering a couple more of these for some of our other project cars.
