It was time to install the new cold-air system. Here, the Steeda unit shines in front of what was in the car when we bought it, and the stock airbox which is all the way in back. Mustang Magic tested several air filter systems for these cars and found the Steeda piece to work best. Its quality construction and attractive price are a crowd favorite.

Installing the included belt can be a two-man job. Because they wanted as much of the factory tensioner's spring wound up for the best grip, Shaughnessy and Lauzardo wanted the shortest belt possible on there, which is a 73.3-inch, eight-rib piece. We then reinstalled the pulley cover for a factory appearance.

Removing the exhaust from an IRS Cobra is much easier than on a solid-axle Fox-4 car because the pipes are below the rear axle. By sliding off a few rubber hangers, the entire after-cat was on the ground in minutes. Another 15 ticks of the minute hand and the catalytic converter assembly was also on the ground. Side by side, the stock system (left) uses small-diameter pipes and four catalytic converters, which aren't the model for efficiency or weight savings. Check out the aftermarket mufflers and tips that the previous owner had installed. The soundtrack was nice, but by leaving the stock pipes in place, the exhaust system was still restrictive. Mustang Magic's exhaust upgrade (right) shines.

Shaughnessy starts things off by lining up the high-flow catalytic converter assembly by MagnaFlow. It uses 2.5-inch stainless steel tubing with an x crossover assembly for the mean and a pair of high flow cats for the green.
