On went the new differential cover. The beefier cast-aluminum piece not only features the mounting position for the pivot point, but a drain plug as well as a fill plug. | Once the differential cover was on and tight, we installed the pivot point. | Next to be installed are the link arms. While they're not side specific, once they're bolted on and linked up on both ends, they do become side specific. |
Once we had both link arms on, we set them into position. Although they're hanging here side-to-side, when the pivot point is in the proper vertical position, the top link arm will go to the left, or driver side, while the bottom link arm will go to the right, or passenger side. | With the link arms installed, we put in the two supplied Allen keys. These serve as set screws and prevent the link arm bolts from walking out. | The link arm mounts are different from side to side. We installed the passenger-side mount first. |
We then moved to the other side and installed the driver-side link arm mount. These also serve as the mounts for the new support brace bar. | The support brace bar was installed next. | The link arms were hooked up and snugged down. Final tightening occurs when the car is on the ground for proper function. Also, we reused the bolts from the Panhard bar, and not only had to put them back on the correct side, but in the correct orientation as well. |
We then installed the new sway bar. The new bar is slightly larger than the stock one, offering a bit more stability to the rear now that the Watt's link has been installed. We reused the sway bar bolts. | Once the car was on the ground and the link arms were tightened, we put the car back on the lift and tightened the sway bar. | Here's the finished product. If you look at what the rear suspension was before, you will see a marked difference. The link arms center the rear under hard cornering more effectively than the Panhard bar, giving this Mustang more handling in the corners. |
Last but not least, we filled the rear with Motorcraft 75W-150 synthetic rear-axle lubricant. Once we put in the fill plug, we pulled the car off of the lift and went for a spin. | The seat-of-the-pants feel was much improved over what it was when the Mustang was equipped with the Panhard bar suspension. While the car plants hard in the corners, it isn't so much that we can't lay down some rubber. | |
