We installed the No. 46 nitrous jet and the No. 30 fuel jet for a quick 100hp improvement. These were followed by the nitrous and fuel supply lines that come from the nitrous-management unit.

We found that the best place...

We found that the best place to mount the nitrous-management unit was on the firewall right above the brake hydroboost unit. This worked with the various fixed-length braided lines supplied with the kit. The nitrous, fuel supply, and delivery lines were connected; then we tackled the purge kit.

The optional purge kit makes...

The optional purge kit makes sure our initial hit of nitrous is the dense mixture we're looking for. Since there's a limited amount of metal line supplied, choosing where the nitrous-management unit goes also affects purge-solenoid placement. Ours had the purge line dead center in the cowl plastic.

The nitrous-management unit's...

The nitrous-management unit's wiring is next. At this time, you'll also want to consider placement of the window switch, since the two are connected electrically. This corner turned out to be a nice spot for it. The black wire is ground, the red goes to a switched 12-volt source, and the white wire goes to the throttle position sensor. We used some 1/2-inch loom cover to hide the wiring and tidy it up a bit.

We ran the nitrous supply...

We ran the nitrous supply line back to the trunk area using rubber-lined clamps. Following the framerail helps keep the line protected and out of the way.

Installation of the nitrous...

Installation of the nitrous bottle is fairly straightforward. Just be sure you're not drilling into the gas tank or other important items under the trunk metal. If you're using the blowdown tube as we did, consider its placement as well when mounting the bottle. The bottle heater has a built-in relay, so don't worry about running one. We then ran the wires for it to the makeshift switch panel under the dash.
At this point, we gave this order: "Leave the tach hanging at 5,000 rpm until we give you the signal to come out." Gregg followed our command, and the modular mill was sing-ing in the burnout box. The smoke billowed, and the ET Streets crackled with gooey adhesion. The resulting warm-up of said rubber enabled Brewer to slip past the 60-foot clocks in 1.89 seconds, and the quarter-mile clocks lit up with a 13.02 at 107 mph.
As HP's Jason Combs and your author watched this last pass, we immediately noticed that the time between the shifts could be improved upon. "Shift it like you're going to tear the shifter out of the floor," Combs said. Getting into the rhythm, our man smoked the hides and rolled into the beams. The lights came down, and off he went. It was extremely apparent that the First-/Second-gear exchange was quick, as the rearend bit down hard on the track surface. The open-header car in the other lane masked the 2/3 and 3/4 shifts, but when the clocks lit up, we knew Brewer had done his job. Rowing the stick like Tom Hanks in Castaway, he seized the quarter-mile clocks, stopping them in 12.65 seconds at 108 mph.

HP's Jason Combs tests the throttle-position switch in search of a wire with 0.5 volts when the throttle is closed, and about 4.5 when it's wide open. The white wire from the nitrous-management unit is then connected to this wire. Ours was a gray wire with a white stripe.

Brewer plans to order one...

Brewer plans to order one of those fancy switch panels that fits in the cup holder, but for now, we whipped up this switch panel to get things moving along. Shown are the purge button, bottle heater, and nitrous arming switches.

Before connecting the window...

Before connecting the window switch, you'll need to program the nitrous-management unit; then connect the window switch and program it. Failure to follow this step could result in a nitrous hit the minute you start up your car.

Once the NMU is programmed,...

Once the NMU is programmed, you can program the window switch.

When Combs was finished with...

When Combs was finished with the install, it was show quality, which is good, since the Mustang sees the local show-'n'-shines quite often.

Before you run out and have...

Before you run out and have the bottle filled, mount the nitrous gauge and the blowdown valve on the bottle.
The little Dark Shadow Gray colt was now in the running, and we all wanted to cool down the Pony for one more final pass, but our borrowed tires had to head out. Still, we lopped off a second in elapsed time and picked up 11 mph.
Why would you want to sit around at a show when you can have fun like this at the track? Hot-shoe Brewer is currently contemplating that, and his future mods went from a built motor to a body kit and hood in a matter of 15 minutes.
