Ford Mustang Nitrous Express Install - It's Time For Nitrous - Tech

After heating our newly installed Nitto drag radials and arming the nitrous system, we arrived at the finish line in 13.62 seconds at 104 mph. We backed that up with a 13.75 at 104 mph. That, folks, is a second-an-a-half improvement in elapsed time, along with a 12-mph increase in trap speed. On just a 100-shot of nitrous oxide, that equates to about a gain of 120 hp. Power junkies that we are, we immediately started looking at the 150hp jets stashed in the glovebox, but we erred on the side of caution and called it a day. In order to run the 150 shot, we'll probably step the spark plugs down another heat range colder, and we really want to look into some sort of timing-retard device. After that, it'll be time for the 150hp jets, and we'll be looking for 13-flat times-possibly a trip to the 12s.  On certain Mustangs, you'll...  On certain Mustangs, you'll need to cut and splice the pump wiring using the provided connectors. Install the new fuel line and filter sock, and pop the pump back in the tank.  When installing the bottle...  When installing the bottle brackets, you'll want to make sure that the right-hand-side holes will clear the rear subframe. Measure twice, drill once, and be careful not to drill into the gas tank or anything else that is hiding underneath the trunk floor.  Before filling the nitrous...  Before filling the nitrous bottle, be sure to install the nitrous pressure gauge and bottle-pressure transducer, if so equipped. Our Stage One EFI system came with a 10-pound bottle, but smaller and larger ones are available.  While some people choose to...  While some people choose to run the nitrous supply line outside of the chassis, we hid ours inside the cabin, routing it underneath the back seat, along the sill plate, and up and out the factory grommet.  The NX Stage One system includes...  The NX Stage One system includes the new Lightning Series solenoids, which the company claims are the lightest, largest, and highest-flowing solenoids on the market.  We opted for this stealth...  We opted for this stealth location to mount the solenoids, mostly because we couldn't find a place we liked in the engine bay. After removing the wheel and inner fender liner, we assembled the solenoids per the instructions and mounted them on the underside of the fender apron. The lines coming in from the sides are the feed lines, while the bottom two lines go to the nozzle.  Since we mounted the solenoids...  Since we mounted the solenoids in the fenderwell, the included piece of tubing for the purge valve (at 6 inches long) was too short to vent outside, so we stopped by the local auto parts store and picked up a 40-inch length of bendable brake-line tubing. We then routed the line from the purge valve, through the firewall, and finally up and out of the cowl vent. Keep in mind that the line will move once the purge is engaged, so you may need to secure it with a plastic tie-wrap or something similar.  NX recommends mounting the...  NX recommends mounting the nozzle 2-6 inches before the throttle body. To install the Shark nozzle, drill a 91/416-inch hole in the elbow and lay a thin bead of silicone around it. Insert the inside adapter and outside adapter, and screw in the nozzle.  We wish we could have hidden...  We wish we could have hidden the NX Shark nozzle a bit better, but this was the optimal placement, and after all, going fast is what adding nitrous oxide to your ride is all about. The nitrous and fuel lines were run into the inner fender area using the existing hole in the fender apron. We installed the 52 nitrous jet and the 33 fuel jet for a quick and easy 100hp hit.  Well concealed, yet easily...  Well concealed, yet easily accessible, the RPM window and TPS activation switches were mounted inside the glovebox. From there, we ran two wires to the toggle switches on the other side of the console, and several wires into the engine compartment using the factory grommet.  You can run the RPM window...  You can run the RPM window and TPS activation switches off of the same relay. We mounted ours behind the glovebox using an existing screw in the HVAC box.  Both the window switch and...  Both the window switch and the TPS activation switch were grounded to the chassis. We used this existing ground behind the kick panel and cleaned a bit more of the paint off to ensure a good ground.  Deciding on where you want...  Deciding on where you want the switches can take some time. We left it up to car owner Brian Bohnsack, who installed them on the side of the center console. We briefly thought about putting them in the glovebox, but if you're belted in the car, you might have a difficult time reaching them, not to mention that anything in the glovebox could accidentally trip them. The top switch is for system activation; below that is the bottle heater switch and the purge button.  The trick throttle-position...  The trick throttle-position activation switch connects to the throttle-position sensor's signal output to the computer.  The fuel pressure is connected...  The fuel pressure is connected to the white wire on the provided relay and is also grounded. It's installed into an included T-block, which is connected to the Schrader valve on the fuel line at one end and the fuel solenoid on the other.  The window switch's white...  The window switch's white wire is connected to the negative side of the coil. If you pull the plug, the coil is marked for positive and negative.  We Left the dyno behind and...  We Left the dyno behind and went straight to the track to test the NX Stage One EFI system. With the jets set for an extra 100 hp, we lopped off a second and a half in e.t. and increased our top-end charge by 12 mph, all with just the twist of a knob and the flick of a switch.  After consulting with the...  After consulting with the folks at HP Performance, we opted to install these Autolite 24 spark plugs. Not only did we replace the stock 78,000-mile plugs, but we also went one heat range colder with the 24s to stave off any detonation.  With the install complete,...  With the install complete, we made some dry checks to make sure the solenoids and bottle heater worked as they should. Now we can fill the bottle and head to the track.  Our little coupe didn't have...  Our little coupe didn't have a chance in hell of spinning the tires on motor, but a hard 100hp hit might just be enough, so we bolted on a set of Nitto drag radials. Nitto's 245/50/16s are right at home on the stock 16x7 Pony wheels.
