We used the Ford tool to compress the valvespring so we could remove the locks (arrow) using a magnet. The locks are basically two half circles that clamp around the valve stem grooves and lock the retainer in place. This way, the valve, retainer, and spring move as one unit as the cam follower opens and closes the valve, as dictated by the camshaft lobe. View Related Article
