Suspension Richard Lelsz
Richard Lelsz of Strictly Performance leaves the starting line with his NMRA Super Street Outlaw ride. The Cobra rolls on 28x10.5-inch slicks, and a ladder-bar suspension helps this turbocharged Pony run mid-sevens.

Suspension Upr Products
Upgrading the Mustang's rear control arms is paramount to performance on the dragstrip. Pictured here is UPR Products' Pro Series suspension system. It was designed in 1998 as an affordable suspension setup without compromises in strength and reliability. This system has helped propel Mustang racers to championships and 60-foot times as quick as 1.15 with slicks and 1.23 on drag radials. UPR sends a trailer to 22 events a year (all NMRA, FFW, and WFC events) and has multi-time champion Jeremy Martorella on staff to field chassis-tuning questions.

Suspension Subframe Connectors
All chassis builders and parts manufacturers agree that a stiff chassis is a huge benefit in drag racing. Adding a pair of subframe connectors is mandatory, and some guys talk about adding a rollbar (or cage)-even if you don't run quicker than 11.50. The stiffer the car, the more energy is transferred to the tires.

Suspension Three Link Suspension
S197 Mustangs feature a three-link rear suspension, and BMR Fabrication offers a variety of replacement control arms. The piece on the bottom of the photo is to replace the stock upper control arm. It features a polyurethane bushing that is ideal for street/strip cars. The upper control arm above it features a spherical bushing-a stronger bushing but much harsher and meant for off-highway competition rather than daily driven cars. The top three components are lower control arms in various forms with bushings and/or Heim-joint rod ends. The Heim-joint ends allow the control arms to be extended and shortened to help adjust pinion angle.

Steeda Autosport Weight Jacker lower rear control arms feature a one-piece billet body and adjustable spring perches. The adjustable perches allow you to alter the Mustang's corner weights and ride height. Steeda places a weight scale under each tire and adjusts the weight at each corner to optimize it for drag-racing applications.

Suspension Weight Transfer
This is what we call extreme weight transfer. Jay Mingolli's EFI Renegade car leaves the starting line with the wheels in the air. He would benefit from tightening up the front struts and rear shocks to help calm down the launch.
