Heads Three Valve Heads
Ford Racing Performance Parts offers CNC-ported, three-valve cylinder heads. They feature massaged intake and exhaust ports as well as reworked combustion chambers. We picked up 33.8 rwhp and 28.3 rwtq on a ProCharger-blown '05 Mustang GT.

Heads Camshafts Exposed
With the valve cover off, the camshafts are exposed. The gears look a bit different than their Two-Valve mod motor cousins. That's because the Three-Valve engines feature variable cam timing. The sensor behind the left side of the cam sprocket receives information from the computer and controls the oil flow, thus controlling the advance and retard of the camshafts.

Heads Remove Pulley Assembly
The lower pulley assembly must be removed before the front cover can come off the engine. This is the ProCharger bottom blower pulley. It uses three dowels to lock into the factory crank pulley. Some of the accessories were unbolted and slid off to the side of the engine, as they're not required to be completely removed from the engine compartment.

Heads Two Chain System
Removing the cover exposes the two-chain system Ford employs to drive the camshafts-which are mounted on top of the cylinder heads. Intimidating? Yep, but if you take your time, it all makes sense. We do, however, recommend that first-timers seek professional assistance. If the chains go back on the wrong way, it could spell disaster.

Heads Graph
Timing was 16 degrees for both the baseline and final chassis dyno pulls. Dez added a bit of fuel to keep the air/fuel ratio the same as the baseline runs. In just one day, we managed to swap the heads and pick up 33.8 rwhp and 28.3 rwtq with the addition of a pair of FRPP CNC-ported three-valve heads.

Heads Undoing Chains
Undoing the chains is perhaps the most critical sequence in the installation. Machie sets the engine at top dead center and marks the chains and sprockets on both the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. The chain has to go back exactly the same way to keep the camshafts in the proper location in relation to the piston. Using two marks on the upper and lower sprockets ensures the chain is reinstalled properly.
