Ford Mustang T56 Six Speed Transmission - 6 Ways To Slam Gears - Tech
With the T56 installed, we turned our attention toward the speedometer cable, which is replaced with a longer unit as its entry point into the transmission case is on the far side of the box now. First, remove the upper dash bezel by removing the top front two screws in the dash, followed by the lower two that are hidden beneath the knee plate. Once those are out, pop out the light switches and unplug them. Then remove the bezel.
The speedometer gear assembly is removed from the cable by pulling out the metal clip. Clean and install the rubber grommet and then the gear assembly onto the new, longer cable. We installed a new 20-tooth black speedometer gear from D&D as well.
The gauge cluster is held in by four screws. After removing them, unbolt the speedometer cable bracket in the engine compartment to give you some slack. Then you can pull the cable through the dash for easier access to the cable's connection behind the cluster.
With the speedometer cable disconnected from the cluster, pull it through into the engine compartment and remove it from the vehicle. You'll need to swap over the rubber grommet.
With the mid-pipe modified, fluids injected, and wiring taken care of, we installed the driveshaft and were just about ready for a test drive.
We also had to slightly modify the stock speed-ometer cable bracket that clamps it to the trans-mission. We didn't reinstall the engine bay bracket, as the cable's new passenger-side location required a different routing.
The T56 requires 4.1 quarts of Dexron III or equivalent fluid for proper lubrication. We used Royal Purple's Max ATF synthetic tranny fluid.
With the dash bezel reinstalled and transmission swap completed, we topped off the Power Tower shifter with this Cobra-spec six-speed knob from Ford Racing Performance Parts. The knob is available as pictured here (PN M-7213-B) or in the 10th Anniversary carbon-fiber pattern (PN M-7213-C).
