High-Performance Crate Engine Buyer's Guide
If you plan on building over 500 hp with a small-block, you should strongly consider a race-style block from Dart, FRPP, or World Products. These aftermarket blocks will normally feature beefier construction with extra material throughout, along with steel, four-bolt main caps.

World's World Class series engines range from 351 cubes with 395 hp to 427 cubes with 495 hp. Each engine is carefully broken in, then run on the dyno to certify that performance levels meet or exceed published specifications. As a testimony to their durability, each World Class engine is backed by a two-year/24,000-mile warranty issued by an independent insurance carrier.
Here is yet another Roush engine with multiple carburetion. Every Roush combination gets subjected to a streamlined OE-style, computer-controlled dura-bility test. And virtually all the engines come with a Roush-backed, two-year/24,000-mile warranty.
This aluminum block from SHM will allow displacement of the modular engine to increase up to 305 cubes on low-deck versions and 358 on tall-deck models.
This is a stock 5-liter crank. It's a cast, nodular iron unit that's good up to about 500-550 horses. Most high-performance applications can use a step up, which would be a forged steel alloy crank.

FRPP has a few modular offerings, including this '03 Mach 1 4.6 DOHC bullet.
Be certain your new engine has quality hardware throughout. The extra cost for top-quality nuts, bolts, and studs is quite small, yet the payoff can be large.
One thing you'll notice is that some builders may charge more than others for similar parts. It's not uncommon to pay extra for the important attention to detail, and that's a big part of doing the job right. In other words, you're paying for more than just parts when you purchase an engine.
Note the chamfer on the oil holes in this crankshaft. This is a small detail that helps oil flow more smoothly through the engine.
Most crate-engine builders list many options. One is likely to be a main girdle that helps to strengthen the block. This is a worthwhile upgrade.
