While they still take a back seat to the 5.0 in terms of parts availability, the aftermarket has apparently realized that a market exists for the 2-V Modular motor.

Our '98 test mule came from Mustang Parts Specialties. The 4.6 2-V Mod motor may have been used, but the thing came right to life and performed flawlessly in all of our testing.

Since the Mod motor had been sitting for some time, we decided to give the stock injectors a quick once-over on the ASNU injector cleaning/test machine. All of the stock injectors flowed perfectly and there were no clogged or leaking units present to ruin our test results.

Comp also supplied the required valve spring upgrade (PN 26113-16) to ensure adequate coil bind clearance and plenty of spring pressure.

Next on the list was this duo from Accufab. Accufab supplied its billet elbow and matching 70mm throttle-body to replace the restrictive stock components. According to Accufab, the combination increased the flow rate by 130 cfm over the stock elbow and throttle-body.

First on the modification list was a pair of Comp cams. Knowing ported heads, blowers and even turbos were in the immediate future, we went whole hog on our cam choice and stepped right to the bottom of the page where we found the XE274H grinds. These XE274H cams offered .500 lift and a 236/240-degree duration split on an idle (and forced induction) friendly 114-degree lobe separation angle.

Tom Habryzk from Westech performed the cam swap. The key to the install was lining up and marking the timing chains to ensure the components went back together in the same orientation that they were removed. Failure to line up the cams properly will result in inaccurate cam timing. The Comp cams upped the peak power from 260 to 302 hp, a gain of 42 hp measured peak-to-peak.

We mounted the fogger nozzle in the inlet tube in front of the throttle-body. This position ensured we could close the throttle-body if either of the solenoids somehow stuck open. The nitrous upped the power peak of our 4.6 Mod motor to 400 hp, while torque jumped to a whopping 500 lb-ft.

The early 4.6 managed to reach 400 hp and 500 lb-ft thanks to a handful of modifications. Even more important was the fact that the motor was still running perfectly and was ready for more testing. As you might have guessed, forced induction is definitely coming up, along with ported heads, a custom intake and who knows what else.

Stock vs. AccuFab Throttle- body and Elbow
Installation of the Accufab 70mm throttle- body and elbow was worth a few extra horsepower when the motor was equipped with the stock cams, but the additional airflow required to feed the extra horses produced by the cam change made the stock throttle-body and elbow even more of a restriction. Adding the Accufab components resulted in gains as high as 10 hp. We suspect the Accufab components will be even more beneficial once we install the ported heads and PI intake.

Stock Exhaust Manifolds vs. Hooker Super Comp Headers
We actually ran this test in reverse, as we had previously installed the Hooker headers on the 4.6 GT motor. Once we were finished testing the cams and Accufab throttle-body, we decided it was a good idea to see how much power the Hooker headers offered over the stock manifolds. The headers were run with 3-inch collector extensions. This open-exhaust system allowed the motor to produce 307 hp and 345 lb-ft of torque. Installation of the stock exhaust manifolds and 2.5-inch manifold (collector) extensions resulted in a dramatic drop in power. The stock manifolds dropped the peak power to just 268 hp. The peak torque was down as well, from 345 to just 318 lb-ft. The restrictive stock manifolds dropped the peak torque production by 500 rpm (from 4,100 to 3,600 rpm), a clear sign of a restriction.
