It's been nearly three months since we began the S&W Race Cars rollcage install into our Amsoil GT, and we're happy to inform you that it's officially complete. As mentioned in our last issue, the install wasn't very difficult but time was not on our side. With deadlines to meet, shows to attend, and the holiday season behind us, we've finally reached the home stretch.
You may remember our GT dipped into the 9.80s at 139 mph, thus the need to ditch the 6-point rollbar and switch to a fully legal 10-point rollcage. Last month, John Guerriero, retired business owner of Chassis Connection, stopped by our Tampa headquarters to lend a hand with the TIG welding of the cage. Guerriero did a fantastic job; we couldn't have physically finished it without him.
Safety has been the essence of this series, and though the wrap-up of the rollcage is a major accomplishment for the build, it doesn't end there. The NHRA and IHRA hold strict rules when going quicker than 10.0 in the quarter-mile (6.39 in the eighth-mile), and as we've noted, meeting and following the rules is crucial.
For this issue, we install a safety net, rollcage padding, a battery relocation kit, and a pair of Kirkey race seats, all supplied to us by Summit Racing Equipment.
We've put a lot of emphasis on how important it is to properly weld in a rollcage to meet NHRA rules. That's a huge part of it, but what about everything else? Follow along as we show how to properly install each of these parts and make our GT 9-second-legal.
