Nuts Over Nitrous

We convert a tame, 14-second '98 GT into an asphalt-eating, fire breather woth a little help from our friends at NOS

1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Engine
Our starting point consisted of a '98 GT with a stock 2V engine. With nothing more than a MAC cat-back exhaust system and a MAC cold air kit, we generated 204.8 hp and 276.8 lb-ft of torque at the wheels.

The setup that we are using is from Nitrous Oxide Systems and is known as the Ford EFI System. It is a dry kit, rated at a maximum of 150 hp (at the flywheel) and uses an external fuel pump to boost the pressure from 45 to 80 psi when the nitrous is being used.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Inner Fender Well
We found an ideal location for our solenoids on the passenger side inner fenderwell. The two Super Powershot solenoids connect together on a 1/8 NPT fitting and work in harmony to inject the nitrous into the air stream.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Nitrous Solenoids
With the two solenoids mounted, we ran the 3-AN nozzle line over to the MAC cold air tube, where it will connect to the NOS nozzle.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Throttle Body
We drilled the appropriate hole in the tube approximately 1 inch from the throttle body opening and tightened down the threaded fitting that will hold our nozzle in place.

For obvious reasons, make sure to remove the tube before attempting to drill into it.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Nitrous Fitting Jet
With the nozzle in position, we installed the .059 nitrous jet and tightened down the 3-AN line.

The 4.6 Cobra engine uses a bigger .069 jet but with the plastic intake on the 2V, we followed the instructions and used the appropriate jet size.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Fuel Vacuum Port
The NOS kit also uses a vacuum port that stops the fuel at the factory regulator from returning the unused fuel back to the tank when the nitrous is activated.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Vacuum T Fitting
When pressure from the nitrous routes into the switch, a vacuum line routed to the OE regulator spikes the pressure from 45 to 80 psi.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Relay
We mounted our solenoid relay on the driver's side, under the hood, and connected the orange wire...

...(with built-in 15 amp fuse) to the positive terminal on the battery.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Splice Connector
After connecting one wire from each solenoid together, we routed them around the radiator and over to the blue wire on the relay.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood WOT Switch
The solenoid gets grounded through a WOT switch, which we mounted on the intake, under a throttle cable bracket bolt. When the throttle is fully activated, the switch becomes grounded, thus completing the circuit at the relay and activating the two solenoids.

1998 Ford Mustang GT Interior Trunk Nitrous Bottle
We mounted our bottle in the supplied brackets with the label facing up. This will ensure that the siphon tube (in the bottle) is angled properly. Take care when drilling your holes not to puncture the fuel tank.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Floor Jack Frame Rail
We then routed the 4-AN braided line from the trunk-mounted bottle to the nitrous solenoid under the hood.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Nitrous Lines
When the bottle gets filled, we'll disconnect this line, crack open the bottle for a split second and flush out any unwanted material such as dirt that might have worked into the line during the install.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Undercar Fuel Pump
The NOS kit also comes with an external fuel pump. The pump is rated at 67 gph, can support up to 700 hp, and when the nitrous is being used, will boost the pressure from 45 to 80 psi creating enough added fuel to prevent a lean condition from occurring.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Undercar Electrical Connectors
Using wire supplied in the kit, the positive side of the pump gets tapped into the OEM brown/pink wire that activates the stock in-tank fuel pump.
1998 Ford Mustang GT Undercar Spliced Positive Wire
The negative side of the pump then needs to be grounded on a clean, sturdy piece of metal.

With the nitrous system installed, the next stop was to the all-important chassis dyno to see what kind of rewards we might come up with. Can we make the power that NOS advertises? The dyno will soon tell us.

The NOS instructions are extremely easy to understand and, as long as you follow them word for word, your nitrous system will operate perfectly for a very long time. The orange wire is for the battery positive, the blue wire activates the solenoids, the green wire routes to the WOT switch and the red wire gets connected to the cockpit-mounted arming switch.

Our engine-only pulls revealed 204.8 hp and 276.8 lb-ft of torque. With the supplied .059 jet, we made 305.9 hp and 369.2 lb-ft of torque at approximately 5,400 rpm.
0309Mm Nitrous26 Z
This amount of power should be more than enough to put us in the high-12s on the quarter-mile.
0309Mm Nitrous27 Z
On the dyno, our air/fuel ratio was showing a conservative 11.5 to 1 at 5,400 rpm. This was a safe number and we could have jetted the nitrous system for 20 to 30 additional horsepower but the NOS instructions suggested otherwise due to the factory plastic intake manifold. Although tempted, we left well enough alone and drove the steed home.
