Very, Very Frightning

Take one four-cylinder Mustang coupe, add a healthy dose of Lightning horsepower, and the result will scare the Brand Xers to death

1986 Ford Mustang Front Burnout
Pretty it isn't, but it sure as hell is fast. Blowers through the hood--how '80s of us.
1986 Ford Mustang Front Side Launching
SHM had to use heavy-duty coilovers up front to keep the nose heavy beast from dragging its snout, ergo weight transfer was not optimal. With a driver and fuel, the car only weighed 3,084 pounds, but most of it is on the front tires.
1986 Ford Mustang Underhood Intake
Yes, we're using the stock MAF right now. D'Amore believes we can pick up a few extra horsepower using a longer K&N air filter.
1986 Ford Mustang Underhood Ice Intake Manifold
This is the first car we've ever tested that we could ice the intake without opening the hood.
1986 Ford Mustang Underhood Fluidyne Radiator
Fluidyne heavy duty radiator and Flex-o-lite electric fan kit (also sourced from Brothers) keep Frightning's temp gauge in the normal zone.
1986 Ford Mustang Underhood Optima Battery
The supercharged 5.4 is a heavy beast, and we may move the Optima battery (sourced from Brothers Performance Warehouse) and the reservoir for the intercooler to the trunk for improved weight distribution.
0305MM Veryveryfright10z
Physics 101: Given equal horsepower, the aerodynamic 3,084-pound car will run 10.8s, while the brick-like truck that weighs 4,600 pounds will run low 12s. Wait until Frightning gets the Fridge's tune-up!
1986 Ford Mustang Interior Hurst Shifter
Hurst Quarter-Stick made shifting effortless. All you had to do was grab a gear whenever the shift light on the Auto Meter tach flashed. We had it set for 5,000 rpm. Any higher and the car slowed down. The Performance Automatic C-4 performed flawlessly, with instantaneous and firm gear changes. We can't wait to hook up the transbrake.
1986 Ford Mustang Interior Dash
In keeping with the "Lightning" theme, we turned to Auto Meter for a full complement of its "Lunar" series gauges. They utilize electroluminescent lighting that is a near match for what Ford uses in the SVT F-150. Too cool! Naturally, that legendary Auto Meter accuracy is a big part of why we chose them. The rest of the interior is hurting. Who are we kidding--there is no "rest of the interior."
1986 Ford Mustang Underhood Shot Supercharged Engine
It's not the width of the engine that made this difficult, but the height. Imagine having a 4-inch cowl hood that's too low. SHM fabricated the long-tube headers and custom H-pipe for us.
