Stiffened & Slammed Part 1

We Put the "Handle" in Project Hot Handler with parts from HP Motorsport, Koni and Eibach.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Rear Side View
The project car known as the "Hot Handler" is coming along quite nicely. Ed's Performance (732/501-3244) sprayed on the new Vermilion Red hue, and the good looks are now complemented with a HP Motorsports suspension and some chassis modifications designed to greatly enhance cornering.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Front Fender Ride Height
Before tearing off any of the old parts, Chris Winter of Crazy Horse Racing measured the ride height of our Mustang.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Undercar Front Suspension
The job began with the removal of the front antiroll bar. Notice the beat up bushings and rusty 165,000-mile struts.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Undercar Removing Front Caliper
Next, the brake calipers were unbolted and placed to the side.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Undercar Removing Front Strut
Winter supported the lower A-arm with a floor jack and removed the two bolts holding the stock struts to the spindle.

The upper strut bolts were then zipped off ...

... and the struts dropped out.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Undercar Removing Front Spring
With the strut out, the jack was carefully lowered and the spring was removed.

Since we're installing new caster/camber plates...

... the stock ones were removed and discarded.

The HPM caster/camber plates allow the struts to be adjusted independently for caster and camber. We will cover alignment settings in Part 2.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Underhood Engine
Here is a shot of the engine compartment prior to installation of the caster/camber plates and the upper strut tower brace. Under severe cornering, the upper strut mounts are loaded by the force of the vehicle and this can cause the strut tower to flex. By supporting each strut, tower flexing is greatly reduced.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Underhood Camber Plate Spacers
Installing the caster/camber plates is actually pretty easy. First, lay the three washers over the existing holes.

Then install the plates and tighten them in place.

Once installed, the plates allow the top of each strut to be positioned for optimum caster and camber.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Removing Cowl Vent
To install the strut tower brace, the plastic cowl must be removed. It's held in by six Phillips head screws and also by the windshield washer spray hose.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Underhood Drilling Strut Tower
Next, we put the brace into position, marked the spots to be drilled, removed the brace, and drilled the holes.

The brace slipped into place and was bolted down. Soon it will cover a much-improved 302 engine.

Another important piece in the handling puzzle is the antiroll bar. The Eibach unit is thicker than stock and will keep the front of Hot Handler flat in the turns.

The kit also includes new urethane bushings that don't distort as much as the stock rubber ones.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Front Corner No Suspension
The front antiroll bar was slid under the car, and we connected the unit to the chassis but not to the control arms at this time.
1302Mmslammed21zoom
Eibach's Pro Kit is designed to lower the front by 1.2 inches and the rear by 1.0 inch. The coils are stiffer than stock and will help prevent body roll during cornering. In addition, they are powdercoated and look pretty cool.

Koni Sport struts, or "yellows," are designed for use with lowering springs so they can provide on-track performance and good road-going ride quality. They are adjustable so you can choose between firm and soft settings, which helps you go from street to track or allows you to tune for best lap times.
1987 Ford Mustang LX Undercar Front Suspension
The front springs were installed between the K-member and the lower control arms.

Then the struts were installed. Here, the nut is run onto the threads to hold the struts ...

... and then the struts were attached to the spindles and tightened.

This is the end link kit for the front antiroll bar.

The new end links bushings are formed from polyurethane and are stiffer than the stock rubber ones (shown at right) so they won't deflect as much. Less deflection means better steering feel and handling.

Here is the installed end link on the passenger side.

With the new parts in place the calipers were slipped back over the rotor and bolted down. Stay tuned because next month we'll tidy up the back and hit the track.
