Zex Appeal

In three hours, we added 81 horsepower and 135 lbs.-ft. of torque to this 147,500-mile Stang--that's ZEXey.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Front Side Hood Open
This high-miler 1992 GT made 303 horsepower and 430 lbs.-ft. of torque with the 125-horsepower ZEX nitrous kit installed. Cost for the kit is just $525.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Engine
The stock 5.0 H.O. looks amazingly clean considering the 147,500 miles it has racked up since 1992. Before testing we confirmed the base timing setting of 14 degrees BTDC and we replaced the stock air inlet system with a K&N conical filter. In this trim the 302 made 222 horsepower and 295 lbs.-ft. of torque.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Interior Trunk
The first order of business was finding a home for the ZEX nitrous bottle. There is no better place than the hatch area.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Interior Trunk Bottle Mount Studs
In order to save time we welded the bolts supplied in the kit to the floor of the Mustang and we painted the area to prevent rust from forming on the bare metal.

Four holes were poked in the rear carpet and the bottle brackets were installed.

Next, the bottle was bolted down. This setup makes for a very clean installation.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Interior Trunk Running Nitrous Lines
Chris Winter (foreground) and Glen Knell of Crazy Horse Racing got to the task of running the nitrous line from the bottle to the engine compartment. The plan was to tuck the line under the rear seat and then to run the line under the car and into the engine bay.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Interior Drilling Hole In Floor Running Nitrous Lines
To accomplish this, we drilled a hole in the floor of the Mustang just forward and to the extreme right of the rear passenger seat
1992 Ford Mustang GT Interior Close Nitrous Lines
The line was run through the hole and the remaining line was tucked under the plastic interior panel to hide it. Note: the ZEX nitrous line is shipped with protective red caps--we kept these in place to prevent debris from clogging the lines during the install. We also used a rubber grommet to protect the line where it passes through the floor of the car.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Shot ZEX Controller
We mounted the ZEX nitrousmanagement unit (NMU) on the frame rail, just under the air filter.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Installing Nitrous Nozzle Throttle Body
Next, we drilled and tapped the throttle body and we screwed in the nitrous spray nozzle.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Installing Nitrous Jet Throttle Body
We decide to start the test using the small 75-horsepower nitrous jet.

According to the ZEX instructions this is the No. 40 jet. It was placed in the opening in the nozzle ...

1992 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Wiring TPS Switch
We followed the ZEX instruction manual and connected the white wire in the nitrous management unit to the vehicle. Here you can see how we actually extended the white wire using a piece of red wire (because it's all we had) and made the connection between the NMU and the voltage output wire that connects to the throttle position sensor.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Interior Arming Switch
The black wire was grounded and the arming switch was installed out of plain sight at the leading edge of the console on the driver's side.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Interior Ignition Switch
Before shooting the juice into action it is necessary to program the activation switch. This entails flipping on the arming switch and turning the key to the "on" position. Then we held the throttle open for 10 seconds and the light on the NMU flashed from green to red, telling us it learned the voltage swing of the TPS.

Next, the arming switch was cycled and we got a constant green light. This told us we were just about ready to rock. Lastly we put the throttle to the mat a few times to listen for the solenoid. We heard it loud an clear.

Once all the connections are made the engine compartment should look something like this. Dyno, here we come.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Installing Nitrous Jet Throttle Body
After hitting our 5.0 with the 75 shot we though it would be a good idea to go for the full 125 hit. This entailed swapping the nitrous jet at the nozzle ...

... and the fuel jet in the Nitrous Management Unit.
1992 Ford Mustang GT Underhood Setting Timing
Lastly we backed off the timing to 8 degrees BTDC. This allowed our near stock 302 to make 303 hp and a whopping 430 lbs.-ft. of torque.
