The manhandling while cleaning these aged plug cables for photographic purposes caused the carbon string cores of several of them to break down and go near the open circuit. This demonstrates that just looking new is no guarantee of function.

The "U Groove" ACCEL plug has shown its worth on a number of dyno test sessions. Because they are relatively low cost it is well worth trying a set to see if they produce results in your application.

The stock base timing on the test 5.0 was 5 degrees BTDC. This is a conservative setting and often requires no more than 89 octane fuel to run. In stock or near stock trim a 5.0 likes more advance than this. Each motor can vary a little due to production tolerances but 12-14 degrees is typical. This particular 5.0 when tested on Precision Dyno's Dynojet topped out at 12 degrees base timing.

The resistance range for wire wound aftermarket high-performance plug cables runs between about 50 to 500 ohms per foot. A check on this MSD cable showed 116 ohms for 28 inches, which works out to 49 ohms per foot.

Burned boots, especially common while dyno testing, can quickly lead to a misfire. The boots on these ACCEL 9000 series cables have been treated with a special heat barrier coating which considerably increases resistance to heat stress and subsequent burning.

Although among the simplest and least costly, these high-temp wire separators from ACCEL can mean the difference between burning up a set of plug cables and having them last years.

Rounding off the end of the side electrode as shown here reduces the peak temperature seen by the electrode so moving away from the possibility of detonation from this source. Also, in the relatively swirl-free conditions that exist at low rpm, this form gets the charge burning more effectively. Be sure to cut the electrode so the end of the tip is no further than half way over the center electrode. If plug life is not an issue cut it so it is between a 1/5 and 1/3 of the way over the center electrode.

Ford Mustang GT Front Side Dyno
Here Panhandle's Mark Biddle puts Brad Chaucer's smart '90 Mustang through the samerigorous dyno test and tune as was done on our Project 5.0. Our test and tune was almost all ignition orientated and, start to finish, resulted in almost 18 hp on the top end and better than 25 lbs.-ft. down the bottom end of the rpm range.
