The crate engine craze is nothing new--smart builders have been shipping ready-to-go engine combinations for years. Packaged engines have become a legitimate way to get your horsepower fix--someone's already figured out the combination, ordered the parts, done the machining, and handled the assembly.

Last month you read about a naturally aspirated Two-Valve engine that gained 28 rwhp without sacrificing any of the car's street manners. The Trick Flow Specialties camshafts made the idle sound healthy but not overly aggressive, and there wasn't any bucking at low rpm. We return this issue to chart the gains while the same engine is exposed to boost.

It's not over the top. It doesn't have a crazy body kit. There's no carbon fiber, airbrushing, or chrome. There's not even a power adder. So what makes Troy Lee's '90 LX coupe so special?

Loyal readers of MM&FF will no doubt remember that we started our "Mods for Coyote Mods" in the last issue. Ford Racing was kind enough to offer up not only a new 5.0L Coyote crate motor (PN M-6007-M50), but also a complete stand-alone Controls Pack. The pair essentially gives you everything to swap the 412hp 5.0L into just about anything and get it up and running.

Mustang. It screams performance, whether you're looking for a V-6, GT, Boss or the new 650hp GT500. Ford also builds turn-key racer cars, both for drag racing and road racing. And these cars win!

For the NMRA, a trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky means the points season is coming to an end. Tension is usually high throughout the pits as racers fight for every possible point towards his or her championship hopes. Story lines play out, and ultimately race winners and champions are crowned. Some head home elated, while others fight the feeling of defeat.

Fast Ford Features

Point blank, no Mustang in history can match what Ford will release this year as a 2013 model. We're talking about the next Shelby GT500, and with 650 hp, 600 lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of over 200 mph, this Dearborn destroyer will leave no question as to which Pony car is king.

As any project progresses, you hope there is a payoff. In the case of our 5.3L, big-bore Four-Valve for Superfly-DOHC, the payoff came with strong power numbers on the engine dyno.

Over the course of hot rodding, one of the more debatable upgrades has been swapping camshafts--especially in modular engines. Given the Two-Valve's complexity and cost of buying two camshafts, the question posed isn't will it increase horsepower, but more appropriately, how much of an increase in horsepower?

Some guys take a 5-liter Fox-body Mustang LX or GT, put a turbo or supercharger under the hood, and call it a sleeper. Others transplant a mod motor into a four-cylinder car and think they have achieved sleeper status. But there's more than just leaving a car looking stock and adding power.

I'll never forget my first fast (or so I thought at the time) car. It was an '87 GT with an E-cam and exhaust. It had 4.10 gears, a T5, five-lug conversion with Baer brakes--back then it felt like a rocket ship! Times sure have changed, and so has my version of fast.

The fourth-generation SHO came out in 2010 bristling with technology. While it doesn't look all too far removed from the pedestrian Taurus, the SHO packs a torquey 3.5-liter, 356hp, twin-turbo, direct-injection, Ecoboost V-6 that feeds its power through a select-shift six-speed transmission and torque-sensing all-wheel-drive.

Here at Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine, we often talk about maximizing efficiency and concentrate on extracting the most performance from a given engine or vehicle. With our Street Smart Windsor project, we definitely went against the grain. When we proposed the idea of building an engine that idled like stock but produced a respectable 350-400, some questioned why we would spend so much money on aftermarket parts and leave so much on the table by going with a small camshaft.
