1996 Ford Mustang Suspension Upgrade Making Room
5 It was necessary to properly position the Panhard bar to ensure there was no contact with the rear differential cover in the full range of motion (bump and droop). The measurements also ensured the Panhard bar was mounted square in the chassis.

6 With the Panhard bar in place, in went the rear coilover assembly. Given the daily driver status, we opted for the sport valving and a set of 250-pound rear coil springs. For track use, it is possible to step up to higher spring rates combined with the race valving in the Bilstein shocks, but the race setup is probably best left to the track, as ride quality will be compromised.

7 Here is a shot of the new MM rear suspension before the installation of the adjustable rear swaybar and torque arm. Note the bump rubber positioned on the top of the rear shock. These replace the factory bumpstops removed from the chassis (above the rear axle).

9 The front suspension came next, starting with removal of the front brakes. Check out the trick slotted rotors installed by the previous owner-we can't wait to get the new Baer Racing system installed. Like the rear suspension, the front struts had seen better days and offered little in the way of confidence-inspired handling.

10 Before attempting to remove the factory K-member, it was necessary to attach the mod motor to this engine support brace. The (very com-plete) instructions supplied by Maximum Motorsports detailed the construction of this brace to facilitate K-member replacement.

1996 Ford Mustang Suspension Upgrade Stock K Member Next To The MM K Member
11 here's a shot of the heavy (roughly 50 pounds) factory K-member next to the much lighter (36 pounds) MM tubular replacement. The new MM piece offers plenty of strength (something lacking in many other tubular designs where weight is the major concern) and revised suspension geometry (increased track, wheel base and improved caster) to go along with the weight savings.
