Remove the beauty plate and... Remove the beauty plate and the upper manifold bolts beneath it. | Take off the EGR valve and... Take off the EGR valve and the 10-pin connectors if you have them, and then remove the coolant lines from the throttle-body. Disconnect the idle air control. | The throttle and cruise control... The throttle and cruise control cables must come off (be careful not to lose the metal clip), and there are a few vacuum lines that must be disconnected from the upper plenum, as well. Remove the last few manifold bolts and the upper plenum will come right off. |
These vacuum lines will need... These vacuum lines will need to be transferred to the Edelbrock unit. Follow their instructions as the routing may change. | The instructions mention that... The instructions mention that it is not necessary to disconnect the fuel lines, but we did it anyway. The large black metal coolant line will need to be swapped over, so be sure to loosen it before you pull the manifold off of the engine, otherwise you'll be in for quite a struggle. You'll also need to remove the coolant hoses from the front of the intake manifold. | There are two fuel line couplings... There are two fuel line couplings that require a special tool to disconnect them. It's usually available at your local auto parts stores and also works on AC lines as well. Unplug the injectors and other sensors from the manifold and set the wiring harness aside. Label and remove the spark plug wires, and mark the position of the rotor and TFI module for reference during reinstallation. |
Once the manifold's peripherals... Once the manifold's peripherals have been removed, take out the bolts and pry the intake loose. It shouldn't put up too much of a fight. Before you clean the cylinder head surfaces, place some cardboard or a towel in the lifter valley to catch any debris. Use some rags or paper towels to plug the ports and scrape until the surface is clean. Follow up with some brake parts cleaner and the engine is just about ready for reassembly. | As you can see, the difference... As you can see, the difference in port size, and subsequently volume, is immense. The Edelbrock piece thus requires its own upper to lower plenum gaskets. | Swapping everything over to... Swapping everything over to the new intake gave us the opportunity to clean up the high-mileage parts. The injectors just slide in with a dab of oil on their O-rings, and the fuel rail presses down easily over them. Be careful not to over tighten the fuel rail attachment bolts, as the small bolts will break rather easily. Don't ask how we know. You'll also have to swap over the air charge temperature sensor at the front of the intake. |
