A few years back we took on one of the most thrilling challenges when we tackled the Spectre 341 Hill Climb in Virginia City, Nevada. I say thrilling because we hurdled a Shelby GT500 up the side of a mountain road course that’s 5.2 miles long, has tight corners (many with no guardrails) and huge drop-offs. It is the ultimate motorsport challenge for man (or women) and machine. And now, it’s back!
“After two thrilling and incredibly fast races in 2010 and 2011, America’s premier hill climb on a public mountain road went dark for two years,” said Cory Burns of Kahn media. “Now, The 341 Challenge is back, promising more high-speed thrills—on an incredibly technical mountain road, as well as a warm welcome in a fun and historic old-west silver mining town nestled in the Sierras: Virginia City, Nevada.”
The dates for the third running of 2014 The Virginia City 341 Challenge are set for June 14-15, 2014 and a new website is accepting applications now.
“The Virginia City 341 Challenge is a rare opportunity to drive flat-out on one of the most technical and aggressive stretches of mountain road in the country, without the worry of oncoming traffic or law enforcement,” added Burns. “The paved course is 5.2 miles long with 22-plus turns, a 1,216-foot rise in elevation, steep drop-offs and few guardrails!
“To use the return road (Hwy 342, which is open to the public) vehicles must be street-legal, registered and insured. Tires must be DOT legal. Highway 341 will be closed for two days of racing in coordination with local agencies, and once again competitors will have a chance to be inducted into the exclusive "3:41 Club" if they can crack the three-minute, forty-one second barrier.”
"This is one of the only events in the world where a driver can show up with a street car and truly test the vehicle and themselves in a real-world environment," says event founder and current 341 world-record holder Amir Rosenbaum. "We will present a professional, well-organized, fun weekend at a cool old-west town where the entire family can show up, hang out with other car nuts and have a great time. We made over 300 runs in 2011, it was a fantastic event. Now that we’re back I’d like to see the fastest street cars come to Virginia City and test their mettle on the mountain.”
The original Virginia City Hill Climb was first run in 1972. Rosenbaum holds the all time record for the event, running the course in three minutes, ten seconds in a Ferrari F40. Five new members were inducted into the 3:41 Club in 2011.
