These days, living green and energy dependence is on everyone's mind. These concepts are not new, but with the recent gasoline price hike a few years back, combined with a struggling economy, people are paying more attention, and taking more action than ever before.
With that mindset coming to the forefront of the average person's thought process, a hybrid vehicle is a highly popular option these days, and Ford Motor Company has several that will keep you wallet fat with cash reserves. We recently were able to test the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, and after spending a week in it, we walked away with a greater respect for both the technology, and the vehicle that utilizes it.
At first glance, the Fusion Hybrid looks like your average citizen vehicle. Four doors, modern styling and a whole lot of glass to provide excellent visibility. Our Brilliant Silver Metallic tester featured the Medium Light Stone interior with the Rapid Spec 502A package. This netted you a host of options including navigation, rear video camera, upgraded Sony sound system, heated leather seating, power moon roof, driver's vision group, and the cross traffic alert system. Sticker as tested came to $33,210, and the hybrid offered fuel economy figures of 41 mpg city, and 36 mpg on the highway.
While some may hear the word hybrid and instantly think of some ridiculously slow, tiny car with 13-inch wheels, the Ford Fusion hybrid is just the opposite. In fact, if they took off the badges and used the factory gauge cluster, you'd never know it was a hybrid, though astute drivers can tell when the gasoline engine turns on and off.
The Fusion hybrid offered plenty of pep from the 2.5L DOHC engine, and respectably pulled away from the stop light. The kicker of it all is the fuel savings. We went a week on one tank, racking up some 541 miles be fore we had to top of the tank to give it back to the Ford press fleet. The computer showed that we had 36 miles to go before empty, and after filling the tank, we would expect to go 597 miles. That's just plain fantastic in our book. Why would you not buy this car?
If you think that is cool, the Ford Fusion Hybrid Team, which included Steve Burke, Wayne Gerdes and Tom Rolewicz set out on a challenge with a 2010 Fusion hybrid, and after 69 hours of continuous running, the team finally had to break the seal on the gas tank.
