Aaron took the injured snake back to Higgins Ford Performance for some needed surgery. The motor was removed and shipped to Sean Hyland Motorsports of Canada for a complete long block assembly. Stage II heads and cams were installed along with a Granetelli tubular K member, Tremec TKO transmission and a Lakewood scattershield. After the needed repairs and upgrades, the Cobra made a whopping 530 rear-wheel horsepower and 450 rear-wheel lbs.-ft of torque. To keep the rear end from scattering under such power, ATD Motorsports in McDonough, Ga., installed 4.30 gears and an Auburn spool with 33 spline axles.
With the Cobra loaded to the gills with supercharged horsepower, Aaron hit the strip with a vengeance. The Cobra shot down the quarter-mile and recorded a much improved 11.04 at 127 mph.
Driving a convertible at such high speeds can be a dangerous affair, so the Cobra was outfitted with a Zartech 8-point roll cage and a RCI 5 point harness. The interior also features a Cobra Monaco driver seat and a set of Auto Meter gauges to monitor fuel and boost levels.
According to Aaron, the supercharged Cobra is well mannered at the track, but he has to granny-shift the car in order to keep the 6 rib belt from walking off the pulleys. The snake launches hard at 4500 rpm, achieving 1.51 60-ft. times and hits the traps at about 6500 rpm.
Aaron looks forward to the upcoming Fun Ford Weekend season; he enjoys being one of only a few 10-second convertibles in the Mod Motor class. He should also enjoy and be proud of contributing to a racing tradition, which will hopefully continue long into the future.
