It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a Cobra Jet! Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords editor, Evan Smith, may just have the coolest job here at Source Interlink Media. Sure, he stays busy working on those deadlines to make sure fresh content is delivered to your doorstep monthly, but sometimes a day at the office means getting strapped into the driver’s seat of a brand-new 2014 Cobra Jet Prototype and shooting down the track like a madman.
This year Evan has been working closely with Ford Racing for some serious Cobra Jet testing. Ford’s race-only Mustang is designed to compete in NHRA’s AAA/SA (Stock Automatic) drag racing classes against Detroit rivals like the COPO Camaro and Drag Pak Challenger. It’s a 9.70 index class, but we expect the CJ to throw down much lower numbers.
This is only the second year running the CJ equipped with a 5.0L Coyote, but this time new camshafts, smaller pulleys, a new transmission, and different tunes were experimented with to ensure maximum performance.
During one pass, Evan takes the grim reaper Cobra Jet Prototype sky-high during testing, launching an impressive wheelie that finally came down about halfway down the track. With all kinds of testing going on with the CJ, it definitely gets a check mark next to durability.
While Editor Smith gets to test some sweet cars on the job, it’s quite the process to make sure that these cars are ready to roll. The Cobra Jet was tested to the max with multiple passes including short shifts and making sure that the engine doesn’t blow up while bouncing off of the rev limiter among other things.
So go ahead and watch this sweet video of some behind the scenes CJ testing with Editor Smith!
