Drag Race, as defined by Webster's New World Dictionary, is "a race between cars accelerating from a stand still on a short, straight course." Street racing is drag racing-highly illegal on public streets, but nonetheless still a drag race.

Crowds of people will congregate on back streets, industrial areas, parking lots, or anywhere they think little or no attention will be drawn. Groups ranging from 50 to hundreds gather and trailered racecars are common.

The spectators stop their vehicles on the highway and essentially block traffic so the racers can do their business. The traffic is halted for a few minutes or up to 20 minutes depending on what is going on.

Sometimes the racers will take turns doing dry hops to ensure their car is hooking. This takes time and wears thin on the opponent's patience.

Don't try this at home. No matter how many times we print the fact that heating nitrous bottles with a torch is dangerous, it still happens. However, a cold winter night in New York usually drops bottle pressure to 600 psi. A torch is the simplest way to get the nitrous bottle to the required 900 psi. This photo illustrates the outlaw nature of street racing where safety is not exactly a priority.

New York's street scene is serious as cars are hauled to the races on trailers. Special thanks goes out to Manny and Pete (of smallblockposse.net) for helping us get a few photos and the lowdown on NYC street racing.

The '03 Cobras are perfect for the street because their powerful factory engines respond well to undetectable modifications. How about this guy who still runs an IRS rear suspension out back? Those front tires are off the ground.

Only years of action can provide two grooves like this. Most of the time street racers use VHT or some other kind of traction compound instead of water for their burnout. Through the line burnouts are a must for several reasons. Getting heat into the cold surface is important. When at all possible, the makeshift dragstrip is usually a concrete roadway of some sort.

Operation Hermes was the Queens District Attorney's and NYPD's answer to an out of control street racing problem in the New York City borough of Queens. By adding street racing to the list of Quality of Life issues in 1997-98 the 20 police officers went undercover to infiltrate the scene. Using video surveillance they eliminated the action on Francis Lewis Boulevard and other area street racing zones. The Quality of Life laws allowed the city to impound cars and keep them. These two Mustangs were acquired in that dragnet and are still actively used on patrol and in public relation events.

Across the country many tracks have been adopting a program to help get drag racing off the streets. NHRA has its Street Legal Drags program, but it seems to have been geared towards the import scene rather than the large domestic crowd. In the Chicago area, a new type of racing event has been growing each year and it is essentially a street racing night at the dragstrip.
