It's good to see the "Powered by Ford" script back on a Mustang engine. Three-valves-per-cylinder technology trickles down from the 5.4 Triton V-8 in the new F-series. Variable Cam Timing and a Charge Motion Control Valve are high-tech answers to boosting torque and horsepower on a multi-valve engine. During development, Computerized Fluid Dynamics helped increase airflow by 8 percent from the starting point of the project.

Exterior color choices are Black, Torch Red, Redfire Red, Sonic Blue and Screaming Yellow (all carried over from last year), along with White, Silver, Clearcoat Metallic Blue and Lime Clearcoat Metallic (new for 2005). No surprise that the '05 Mustang retained the traditional three-bar vertical taillight motif. The wing is standard on the GT; least it can be deleted.

Basic interior choices are Medium Parchment (essentially tan) cloth and leather and Light Graphite cloth and leather; the optional red accent package is only available with Dark Charcoal GT leather interiors. Mercifully, Ford has finally delivered a Mustang with the seatback release located where it is supposed to be-at the top of the seatback. The rear seatbacks fold higher up than usual, giving the car a flat floor when folded.

The Mustang now employs a true MacPherson strut-style suspension, with a rear-facing L-arm and the spring mounted to the strut. Note, how the front sway bar is now mounted to the strut tower. L-arms are light weight aluminum, but are as strong as a traditional stamped-steel piece.

A state-of-the-art solid rear axle was designed for the V-6 and GT models. It's a three-link setup (two lower control arms, one upper) with a Panhard bar standard. The GT gets a stabilizer bar, but the base model does not.
