The hottest small-block Ford available for 1966 was the 289-inch V8 found under the hood of Shelby Mustangs. It was based off the solid-lifter K-code 271-horsepower Hi Po engine, but bumped up at Shelby American with a "Cobra" camshaft, aluminum high-rise intake, 715-cfm Holley carburetor and Tri-Y headers. These 306 (gross) horsepower beasts also received a 61/2-quart aluminum oil pan with side kick outs, cooling fins and low restriction mufflers with side exhausts. To further improve appearance, the engines also got finned aluminum valve covers and chrome air filter lids.

Though not as pretty as Shelby's V8, the 281-cube SOHC Modular engine is quite the functional piece. It has 260 net horsepower with a useable torque band and is also fuel efficient, quiet and will live well past 100,000 miles.

There were quite a few late-model Mustangs that wore a similar badge to this one found in the grille of the '66 Shelby.

The Shelby's open rear end made starting line launches tricky. We did our best by heating the tire before each run with a short burnout.

Function is the name of the game on the Shelby. These side scoops feed cold air to the rear brakes for cooling. This was a big plus on the road courses.

Production Shelby Mustangs wore a variety of wheels including Ford OE wheels from a Galaxie, along with wheels from American Racing and Cragar. Sizes were 15x51/2-inches and the stock tires were Goodyear Blue Dots. Peter Larkin's model sports 205/60R15 Pirelli P6000s on the Cragars, which were leftover from the '65 models.

Shelby enhanced the interior of his Mustangs by adding a 3-spoke steering wheel with Cobra GT350 insignia and a dash-mounted tach, also with Cobra insignia, racing lap belts and Cobra shift knob. In the name of speed he removed the rear seat, though it could be kept as an option.

The interior in our GT was so new it still had the plastic seat covers intact. With leather and creature comforts, it is quite functional, but it lacks that racy feel of the Shelby. The seats would be more at home in a '77 LTD II rather than in a musclecar with this kind of cornering capabilities.
