Bird of no Feather

The Falcon name was familiar, but this Australian Ford shared nothing with its soulless American counterparts. We drove one to discover for ourselves what the magic down under was all about.

The chance of a lifetime. Not only were we able to see up close and personal an Australian Ford Falcon XB GT 351, but we were also offered a chance to drive one. Here, Mark Scarselli, the proud owner of this 1975 Yellow Blaze coupe, motors down the freeway. There's no trick photography here; this Falcon is right-hand drive.

Right hand drive means everything that you're accustomed to from the driver's seat is no longer useful. The ignition key, pedals, and switchgear are instinctively located, but the shifter, turn signal stalk and HVAC controls take some getting used to. When Scarselli allowed me to drive the car, I was able to learn things quickly. The hardest part was keeping the car in relation to the road. I often found myself trying to correct my natural tendency to drive a car from the left seat.

The rear flanks are rather bulky, and make for a tough outward view when looking over your shoulder. But they do look rather tough with the lower side scoop (non-functional) and race-inspired fuel filler cap attached. Note how the side windows blend sharply into the C-pillar.

The rear decklid spoiler looks like it comes from a Mustang, but shares nothing more with it than a black finish. The taillights neatly integrate into the rear filler panel, and follow the contours of the rear bumper perfectly--a very handsome tailsection indeed. Note the rake of the rear window and how its ends turn up with the sheetmetal around it.

Underneath, Ford of Australia utilized the familiar 9-inch rear axle. ATraction-Lok differential came standard, as did 3.00:1 gears on 4-speed cars. If you opted for the FMX slushbox, you were (un)endowed with 2.75 gears. Everything here else is 1970s status quo--leafsprings and a shock mounted diagonally for each wheel.

The hoodscoops come on GT models, and are identical to the ones used on Mach 1 Mustangs. The black center stripe is matte, just like the American ponies of the same vintage. The hood uses a conventional latch inconjunction with hoodpins thatscrew into place.

Clear driving lamps are flanked by conventional sealed beam headlamps that measure seven inches. On Falcon GT models, Ford of Australia added a deep matte-black chin spoiler in conjunction with the scooped hood to the XB Falcon. If that front bumper looks familiar to you it should; it's the same one found on 1971-1972 Mustangs. Rolling stock consists of 12-slot 14-inch rims with Futura radials.

Scarselli poses with his very unique ride. Factory options include a manual crank-operated steel moonroof, power windows, and Selectaire air conditioning. Interior upholstery is black vinyl, which has been kept in meticulouscondition, much like the rest of the car.
