2013 Mustang Launch Party

One look at the horsepower wars between the current crop of modern muscle cars and it's undeniable, the muscle-car era is in full attack mode with all guns blazing. And Ford leads to assault with its new 650 hp GT500 sporting a 5.8-liter modular motor topped with a TVS2300 blower that's good for 200-plus mph?

It's no secret the Ford camp wasn't going to rest on its laurels when Chevrolet released its 580 hp ZL1 Camaro, so Ford pulled out all the stops with its latest SVT creation and recently revealed it to a small number individuals during the 2013 Mustang Launch Party held at the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles, Ca.

In addition to the entire updated Mustang line, attendees were greeted to a special presentation from Ford executives and Carroll Shelby himself. Before the veil of secrecy was lifted from the new GT500, Mr. Shelby proclaimed the latest iteration to be his favorite one yet.

"People have always asked me what my favorite Ford is, and I usually tell them it's the next one, but I'm going to take that back tonight, it's this one," he proclaimed to a cheering crowd.

Bold words indeed, as Shelby has created many fabled cars throughout his relationship with Ford. Shelby went on to explain that in the 60 years he's worked in the industry, never before has he worked with a group as impressive as the current SVT and Mustang teams.

Along with the game-changing GT500, Ford also unveiled the updated Boss 302 that sported fresh 70s era stripes, subtle styling updates and the magical Track Pack option. The GT didn't go untouched either, as base horsepower now swells to 420 hp and similar styling updates are also bestowed to the GT and V-6 vehicles. Recaro seats are now optional on GT Mustangs, as is the Torsion differential from the Boss. A pair of functional heat-extractor hood vents find their way onto the GT and Boss variants as well. The evening of new cars, great food and cold beverages culminated with a live concert from The Bravery.

Ford is looking to take names with its updated line of Mustangs, but perhaps the most fitting commentary came from the great Carroll Shelby when he was asked what his favorite Ford of all time was.

"It has to be the Mustang, I've made my life on it."

We couldn't agree more, Mr. Shelby, as we all remember our first run-in with a Mustang, an experience that left us with a lasting impression. It's going to be an interesting year for the muscle-car scene and we wouldn't want to be anywhere but in the Blue-Oval camp. Ready or not, look out world; the most powerful Mustang to ever roam the streets is upon us.
