Tim "Wheels Up" Matherly had the crowd cheering just about every time he made a pass. His modular-powered machine motored past much of the 12-car Real Street contingent to the final, where he faced number-one qualifier Bruce Hemminger and his nitrous-sniffing, pushrod-pounding notchback. When the lights came down, it was Matherly with a slight edge off the Tree, carrying his lead through the traps with a 9.90 victory over Hemminger's top-end-charging 10.04 effort.
