The '99 Mustang Cobra of Byron Center, Michigan's Shawn Johnson sliced and diced the Tree against top-seated Mike Washington with a 0.075 reaction time versus a 0.176. Washington's quicker-but-losing pass was not enough to overcome the starting-line advantage. Dennis Merrow had also been chopping down the Tree as well, but slowed in the F/S final to hand the win to Johnson, who also prevailed against Nostalgia Super Stock champ Bud Cochran in the NMRA/NMCA showdown.
