It was an emotional roller coaster for Dwayne Gutridge in the finals. He entered the event with a lock on the championship, but he struggled a bit in qualifying. A broken transmission forced him to miss most of qualifying, and he put his coupe in the top spot on the last round with an 8.55. On Sunday, the car had problems staging in a bye run that was to send Gutridge to the finals. The coupe pushed through the lights, causing a red-light start. The bad part was that he had to be DQ'd because he officially did not take the green. That put him out of competition. In typical Gutridge fashion, he was smiling despite the starting-line problem.
